Self-taught painter and sculptor, Swensen draws on themes of love, magic, dreams, evil, energy and embellished with surrealist themes derived from cinema and folklore. The contemporary use of traditional and figurative elements define his work. Visual cues related to such topics are deeply rooted within the context of his works. In folklore, tales are passed down through storytelling that often took place at night.Swensen’s paintings pull out folklore elements and place them into a visual form. Each piece acts as a still image of a story allowing the viewer to process the tale in their own way. Often by using a dark color palette Swensen brings the element of night to the works. This further engages one’s perception and history relating to nighttime rituals and evening storytelling. The creation process is constant as ideas arrive suddenly like mini dreams in need of capture. Inspiration is hard to pinpoint. In our current technological age images are flowing in at a constant rate.
